Radiological Response

This two-day program is designed to provide responders with the knowledge base necessary to assess and mitigate radiological incidents. The lecture portion of the program includes a discussion of the nuclear and physical properties of radioactive materials, radiation effects and dose limits, identification of radioactive materials, detection of radiation, radiological incidents and radiological terrorism, assessment and mitigation of radiological events, and community radiological preparedness. Also included in the program are Cheryl’s Radiological Assessment & Mitigation Procedures (RAMP) which were developed to enable the establishment of zones, determination of entry times, application of gamma shielding, determination of exposure rates based on radioactivity, and quantification of gamma exposure rates for radiological surveillance. The lab portion of the program employs video scenarios, paper exercises based on NRC incident reports, tabletop exercises with radioactive sources, and full scale drills to provide students with an opportunity to practice radiological response decision making.
