3WS Radio has been a Pittsburgh Radio Institution since 1980.
It started out with WWSW-AM in 1931 and today WWSW-FM, 3WS is still going on strong in Pittsburgh.
On July 7, 1931 WWSW-AM signed on the air at 1500 on the dial. WWSW-AM moved to 1490 and after the World War II to 970. Some of the names associated with WWSW-AM went on to great fame. Rege Cordic and Art Pallan went to KDKA for many years. Bill Cullen became a long time TV Game Show host.
In 1941, WWSW-AM got an FM sister station. WWSW-FM signed on the air in the August 1941 as WMOT-FM. The WWSW-FM call letters were assumed around 1949. In 1973 WWSW- FM became top 40 WPEZ-FM.  WPEZ-FM 's Bob Pittman & Buzz Brindle went on to help create MTV. Even Bill Cardille spent time on the air at WPEZ-FM.
Just after Labor Day 1980, WPEZ-FM became 3WS. The official FCC approval came on September 28, 1980, and WPEZ-FM became WWSW-FM. From adult contemporary to oldies to classic hits, this is the story of 3WS Radio, Pittsburgh.
