Myron Cope
(January 23, 1929 - February 27, 2008)

Myron Cope passed away February 27, 2008 at the age of 79.

It is almost impossible to put into words exactly what Myron Cope meant to so many people. From his days as a local sportswriter for the Post Gazette to his award winning work for Sports Illustrated and the Saturday Evening Post. As a broadcaster with his daily commentaries to his nightly sports talk show on WTAE radio. And as an analyst for 35 years on the Pittsburgh Steelers radio Network. Myron Cope led the Steelers Nation with the Terrible Towel while at the same time raising millions of dollars for the Allegheny Valley School.

Ted Atkins - WTAE Radio's Captain Show Biz was kind enough to share his thoughts on Myron's Passing...

"When I first came to Pittsburgh in '73 Myron was already doing color on the Steelers games (3 years) and also a short morning commentary on TAE.  Hearing him for the first time I couldn't believe it and the very first note I made was to FIRE MYRON COPE.  Myron frequently mentioned this in talks in later years.  It didn't take me long to realize I had a real gem on hand.  When I asked him to do a one-hour nightly sports-talk show he was VERY reluctant.  He said he didn't think he could handle talking to a bunch of drunks in a bar every night.  He only agreed to do it on a trial basis and, as they say, the rest is history.  His success was immediate and the ratings were through the roof.  That show probably did as much as anything to create his reputation and image.  Having Myron, the Steelers, Pitt and O'Brien & Garry were the 4 main ingredients in the WTAE stew.  YOI!!!"

These comments are from former WTAE Personality Mike McGann...

"I have been priviledged to work with many talented people during my 40 year career. I worked with Myron for 10 years. I doubt anyone will ever surpass Myron Cope for his unique talent, vast knowledge of sports, his truly friendly manner and for being a genuine human being. If Myron could make you smile, he was always happy to do so. Something we should all learn from a guy who was one of the best ever, take your work seriously, but never take yourself to seriously. I will miss him"
