 Sports Talk . . .
Sports talk on WTAE was always fun. Myron Cope came to WTAE from a career as a sports writer.  Myron was writing for Sports Illustrated when Captain Showbiz asked him to provide sports commentary in morning and afternoon drive.  Myron was willing to do so once he found he was able to it from his home.  Myron's nightly sports call-in show was one of the hottest talk shows in the city.  His callers became personalities in their own right.  Myron's nightly 1 hour 6 PM show eventually expanded into 2 hours nightly.  Eventually a second sports talk show would be added into the night time mix, bringing Stan Savran to WTAE from KQV.
The History of the Terrible Towel

Stan Savran brought a very exciting sports talk show to WTAE.  Stan's show was very fast moving and Stan has always been very vocal about Pittsburgh sports.  Stan, originally from Cleveland, has been a part of the Pittsburgh sports scene since 1976.  Stan now is the host of Savran on Sportsbeat on Fox Sports Pittsburgh.  Stan can be heard all over Pittsburgh, in addition to Sportsbeat, he is back on 1250, doing fill-in work at WEAE - ESPN Radio 1250. He is also part of the Steelers' post game show with Mark Madden.

 Play By Play Sports . . .
Myron Cope teamed up with Jack Fleming as part of WTAE's Steelers Football announcing team.  It was Myron's idea to bring towels to football games after Captain Showbiz came to him looking for a gimmick to promote the broadcasts.  The Terrible Towel was born.  The towel is brought out still today to Steelers home games and continues to provide funding for charity in the Pittsburgh area.  Myron retired bfore the 2006 season. Jack Fleming was presented the Chris Schenkel Award by the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.  The long time voice of the Steelers and the West Virginia Mountaineers, Jack Fleming passed away in January 2001.

Bill Hillgrove, a native Pittsburgher, has moved from afternoon personality on WTAE,  to WTAE-TV sports for many years and is now the voice of both the Steelers, and Pitt Panthers.  Bill has been the voice of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers Football and Basketball teams since leaving his disk jockey career behind.  For years Hillgrove worked with Johnny Sauers in the Pitt Football booth.  He continues to work with former Duke Basketball star, and former Pittsburgh Pirates star shortstop Dick Groat on Pitt Basketball.
